Llanelli switch venue of Well tie

Parc y Scarlets

Motherwell's Europa League first qualifying round second-leg tie against Llanelli has been moved from the Reds' home ground to the Parc y Scarlets.

The new venue is the home of Scarlets and Llanelli Rugby Football Club and has a capacity of just under 15,000.

Llanelli's Stebonheath Park's 3,700 capacity was deemed unsuitable for the number of travelling Well fans.

Motherwell have been allocated 3,300 tickets for the game against the Welsh Premier League runners-up on 9 July.

The Scottish Premier League outfit will host the Reds in the first-leg of the tie at Airdrie's Excelsior Stadium while their Fir Park pitch undergoes extensive repairs.

Johnson completes Birmingham move

Roger Johnson

Influential centre-back Roger Johnson has moved from Cardiff City to Birmingham City for £5m.

The 26-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year deal which will keep him at St Andrews until the summer of 2012.

Johnson is the third centre-back to join City's ranks this summer following Scott Dann and Giovanny Espinoza.

"I am really pleased to be here, Birmingham are a massive club and I am looking forward to putting the shirt on to be honest," said Johnson.

"Premier League football is the dream at the start of any footballer's career so I am pleased I have been given that chance with Birmingham and I can't wait to get started.

"The aim is to stay in the Premier League with Birmingham and hopefully I will have a big part to play in that.

"I want to do well for the club. At both clubs I have been at I have got on well with the fans and hopefully that will continue here."

The arrival of Johnson breaks the Blues' transfer record for a defender.

The newly promoted Premier League side had two bids for Johnson rejected before Cardiff gave up the battle to keep their key defender on Wednesday.

Their previous bid failed despite meeting Cardiff's valuation because the full total was dependant on too many variable factors, while the Bluebirds had also wanted the majority of cash up front.

Johnson, who was named in the Professional Footballers Association's Championship team of the year, was arguably the hottest defensive prospect outside the top flight.

His performances for the Bluebirds last season were the bedrock that Cardiff's Championship play-off charge was built on.

But the 2008 FA Cup finalist, one of Cardiff's heroes who starred at Wembley in their 1-0 defeat by Portsmouth, was in tears when Dave Jones' men missed out on a top-six place with 15 minutes of the season remaining.

Johnson also attracted interest from north-east rivals Sunderland and Middlesbrough, as well as Premier League strugglers Portsmouth.

He was a bargain-basement signing by Bluebirds manager Dave Jones in the summer of 2006, when Cardiff beat south Wales rivals Swansea City to capture him for £275,000 from Wycombe Wanderers.

"It will be good value for a player we invested £275,000 in," Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale told BBC Sport Wales on Wednesday.

"There is a sell-on clause of profitability to Wycombe Wanderers and they'll be getting what they're owed out of this deal.

"But obviously that still leaves substantial funds for us and we will wheel and deal in the transfer market as best we can.

"What we have to do is to make sure that whatever money comes in we reinvest it and make us stronger than we were last year.

"Every football supporter has got to accept that every single football club is a selling club.

"It's not whether you sell that's the problem, it's how you invest the funds when you sell.

"What we've done at this football club is to build a new stadium and build a team that's got stronger each year and we'll continue to try and do that."

Johnson missed just one League game last season - Burnley at home on Easter Monday - due to the throat injury he sustained at Crystal Palace in April.

The defender's substitution that day at Selhurst Park was the first time he had been off the pitch in the league season.

He was arguably the most consistent member of Cardiff's side for the past two seasons.

Johnson made 119 League appearances for the Bluebirds, scoring 12 goals - one of which came in the FA Cup quarter-final win at Middlesbrough.

Man City to be warned off Lescott

Joleon Lescott

Everton's Joleon Lescott is a target for Manchester City

Everton are bracing themselves to fight off a £15m bid from Manchester City for England defender Joleon Lescott.

Lescott, 26, has been strongly linked with City and reports suggest an offer from manager Mark Hughes is imminent.

BBC Sport understands Everton have had no contact and any offer will be instantly rejected.

Toffees boss David Moyes insists his stars are not for sale and it may be up to Lescott to force the issue if he wishes to quit Goodison Park.

Lescott has had three successful seasons at Everton after moving from Wolves in a £5m deal but City are homing in on him as their next big-money buy after landing midfielder Gareth Barry from Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers striker Roque Santa Cruz.

oyes, backed by chairman Bill Kenwright, is ready to block any offer and the crucial move may lie with Lescott and whether he prefers the greater riches on offer at Eastlands.

Moyes will also be reluctant to weaken further in central defence, with Lescott's fellow England international Phil Jagielka not expected to return until November after knee surgery.

Yobo targets top four

Joseph Yobo is convinced Everton can force their way into the top four with a bit more financial muscle.

Yobo was part of the side defeated by Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley in May, after which manager David Moyes pleaded for the funds that would allow him to strengthen his squad during the early weeks of the summer.

Moyes is still to make a move, but providing he gets the right backing from chairman Bill Kenwright, Yobo is convinced Everton can smash the barrier that separates the top four from the rest.

bright future

Yobo said: "With a better financial backing, we can be in the top four before long.

"We have a very bright future ahead. We have finished these past two seasons within the top six and we are still growing as a team. I believe that in the very near future we will break into the top four in England."

Yobo made 27 Barclays Premier League appearances for the Merseysiders in 2008/09, scoring once. He has made 168 league starts for Everton since joining from Marseille for £3.5m in May 2003.

The 28-year-old centre-back is also a key figure for Nigeria, winning 68 caps.
